Clean is not the same as sterile.
Instruments may look clean, but microscopic germs can still be present. Sterilisation is a validated process that eliminates all forms of microbial life, including highly resistant bacterial spores.
What is an autoclave?
An autoclave is a specialised sterilisation machine that uses pressurised steam at high temperature to sterilise suitable reusable dental instruments. It works on the same basic principle as a pressure cooker, but is designed for medical and dental use, with carefully controlled cycles.
